Falls Creek have had 15cms of snow since Sunday, with reports of depths being 25cms in places.
So someone up there decided to get the ski’s out and make us all jealous that we can’t be up there to enjoy the early snow

This photo was taken from the Bourke Street Webcam this morning @ 7:40am.
Mt Buller recieved 10 cms of snow yesterday with the temperature plummeting to -1 yesterday. There is more snow expected and it is currently -3.7.
At last weekends working party it was suggested that maybe it should have been postponed to this weekend to take advantage of the 3 day break. Looking at that pic, I think it was a good thing as we would all probably be still up there.
Not that that’s a bad thing

In Australia one of the the alpine hibernating animals is an endangered Australian marsupial, the Pygmy Possum. The Pygmy Possum is found only in Australia’s snow-covered alpine and sub-alpine region above 1400 metres in Victoria and New South Wales. It hibernates in the winter months, between April and October. During hibernation the possum’s metabolic rate is reduced by about 98 per cent. At the beginning of winter hibernation might last for several days before the hungry possum wakes to dine from its food cache of stored seeds and nuts - a storage facility rare among marsupials. This period is extended as the winter progresses, lasting as long as three weeks during the coldest months.
Over in the US the American Black bear “hibernates” during winter in hollowed-out dens in tree cavities, under logs or rocks, in banks, caves, or culverts, and in shallow depressions. The Bears do not eat, drink, defecate, or urinate during hibernation as they use their fat stores that are bulit up over the warmer months. It is not the true hibernation of smaller mammals, such as the Pygmy Possum, since their body temperature does not drop significantly . The bears are in a ‘torpor state’ and are not as quick or alert as they would be in the summer, but they are aware and moving around in the den feeding and grooming the cubs.
Bear monitoring involves locating collared bears and seeing if they have had cubs. The bears get a physical and then photographed for the records. Everything is recorded and compared to last years examination. Since the study is in the same area every year, many of these bears have been seen before. [click to continue…]

Tennis World No. 3, and Australian Open Men’s Champion, Novak Djokovic stopped by at Ski Dubai to catch a few runs as a lead up to the 2008 Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships over the weekend.
With five runs that vary in difficulty, height and steepness, Djokovic was able to test his skills at the indoor resort.
“I took up skiing before I learnt to play tennis at the age of four,” explained Djokovic. “Skiing is a great sport, it’s a lot of fun and it’s my biggest passion.
“It is something I have done all my life, but of course it isn’t recommended for tennis players to ski because of the possibility of injury. I have never been scared on the slopes and have always been careful.”
