Mt Buller Fire Update

by nutcrackerskiclub on December 8, 2006

From Gabby Crehan

To all Nutcracker Members
As Caroline is a little tied up at the moment preparing to save Mt Buller from fire, she has asked me to circulate updates of the status of the bushfire danger to the mountain.

The mountain was evacuated on Tuesday of all but fire fighting and essential personnel and as of today, the road has been closed to travel in both directions.  They have 4 to 5 strike teams and units ready for the worst, which is expected to come through tomorrow. A decision is to be made today
if and where to doze containment lines, and Spook (the Fire Chief) will man the pump station himself, which is a very vulnerable area as it is surrounded by dense vegetation.

The main onslaught is expected to come from the North, so the team has cleared as much combustible material away from around the lodges at our end of the mountain as possible (including the timber stacked behind our Club at
the last work party).  Caroline has personally spent a lot of time on Nutcracker stuffing the holes in the stone work under the Lodge with foil and blocking other holes, vents, etc., but the assessment team fears embers entering via the roof area could still flare up after the fire passes over.

Caroline is living at the Chalet at present as it is a safer option that staying in the front line of the fire.

As I can only communicate this information to members on email, please advise any other members you feel should be kept informed.

Here’s hoping the weather bureau has got it wrong as usual and the threatening conditions will abate!

Regards
Gabby
