Mt Buller Fire Update 13

Morning All,

Have just heard a report from the CFA regarding the fire situation.

Fire Crews have been backburning over the past 48 hours at Buller, and they have succeeded in doing a fair bit. Authorities are very confident that the security of the village is substantially higher than it has been over the past few days.

Tomorrow is looking to be another Hot Day with possible high winds, so let’s hope that the past few days will prove beneficial to the Firefighters.

 Cheers

Mt Buller Fire Update 9

Hi All,

What a day!

Fires continued relentlessly throughout the day in Eastern Victoria. It came within a Kilometre of the Mt Buller Village on the South and West side of the mountain with most of the southern ski runs affected. Spot fires occured at Kofflers and the Summit area, but these were quickly extinguished.

Fires surrounded the Wombat Chair lift. Operators kept the lift running to prevent the fire affecting the cables.  Kofflers and Wombat Kiosk escaped harm.

Action is being taken on the water catchment areas to protect water supplies.

Ember attacks are expected this evening before the cool change takes affect.

I took a couple of looks at the Ski.com.au webcams today and some of the views from the “Chamois” cam would have been fairly unnerving to be amongst.

The Tourist road remains open to the public, but again it is strongly advised to delay unessesary travel to the area.

Hopefully the cool change brings welcomed relief for the firefighters.

Will keep the updates coming as it comes to hand.

Mt Buller Fire Update 7

Hi All,

Just as we thought it was safe on the mountain, nature throws it straight back.

Just recieved a call from Gabby who, in turn, has just had a chat to Caroline after her shift had ended moments ago.

The fires are currently burning around Family Run, Wombat run, Grimus’ Chair, Howqua and Fanny’s Finish. The fires are being fought via Aircraft and whatever road access available. Obviously the main concerns are the chair lifts and structures around those areas and preventing the fires from moving towards the village.

The Mt Buller Tourist Road is still open to the public, although this can change at any moment. The Emergency services are strongly recommending against travelling to the area.

I guess it’s fortunate that there’s not alot of vegetation past the summit, except grass, heading towards the Village so hopefully the fire dies a quick death.

I will post any further news as it comes to hand.

Cheers

Falls Creek

Hi All,

Happy New Year to everyone!

My partner and I were hoping to go up to Buller for NYE but it was remaining closed due the fire still being a threat. So we went an extra couple of hours up the road and stayed at Falls Creek where Scott Chisholm, his wife Kirsten and children Christopher and Emma plus Kirsten’s parents, were staying!

We stayed at Karelia Lodge which was very friendly accommodation and would highly recommend it to anyone travelling there.

Had a fantastic time, and it was fairly interesting weather. New Years Eve afternoon Scott, Mark and myself went mountain biking around the summit and did a fair bit of off road adventuring, travelling down a couple of blue and black runs (which is what a few places on my legs looked like after falling off once!).  Took a couple of pics while we were up there, see the pdf file below.

As soon as we got back to the Lodge to shower it started bucketing down, and it didn’t stop till sometime the next morning. Karelia Lodge put on a 3 course Fondue Dinner with complimentary champagne which was very enjoyable and more than satisfying.

We departed the next day in the afternoon and stopped at a few places along the road to take some pictures of the fire damaged areas. It certainly came very close to Falls Creek, areas not too far from the entrance gate were affected. But it was the road between Mt Beauty, South Tawonga and Bright that was the most devestating. I didn’t take any pictures of it but it was pretty much flattened with no vegetation left standing.

Hope you find the pics interesting.

Cheers
