Victoria is currently building the National Ice Sports Centre, adding it to it’s world-class list of sporting facilities that make Melbourne Australia’s sporting capital. The Centre will feature two Olympic sized rinks with spectator seating and will be equipped to host national and international ice hockey, figure skating, curling and speed skating events.
The Centre is being built at the Docklands, beside the Observation Wheel, and will become a recreational hub for Victorians that will cater for a range of elite sport and recreational winter sports enthusiasts. The Centre will be home to the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia and Ski and Snowboard Australia, providing a national base for Olympic training and assist Australia’s elite athletes to compete at the top level. Apart from being a world class training base for ice sports, the building will accommodate an athlete gym, medical centre, and physio treatment rooms for Snowsport athletes and coaches.
It will also provide access for the general public to participate in recreational ice sports or come and try activities.
The Victorian Government is contributing $10 million towards the National Ice Sports Centre, which will be the first of its kind in Australia. ING Real Estate Development Australia is investing $48 million in the project, which is expected to be completed by early 2010.
Ski and Snowboard Austalia recently posted this Channel 7 report on the progress of this fantastic project.
